D654 Transect 43 Muddy slope with scattered carbonate boulders/bedrock. Sea pen fields on muddy upslope towards the end of the dive. P2. Water Depth: 1328m. Feature: Slope

Highlights: Anemone - Phelliactis Purple octocoral Yellow sea fan Red sea fan - Swiftia Bamboo coral - Acanella Bamboo coral - Acanella, sea pens & sea urchin - Phorosoma placenta Bamboo coral - Acanella & sea pens Dense sea pen field Large sea pen

Of note: Sea pen field, fishing gear, plastic rubbish.

An initial gentle incline with mixed sediment becomes more steep and meets vertical carbonate cliffs. The cliffs host only sparse epifauna. At the top of the cliffs there is a gentle to moderate slope with fine sediment containing some burrows. Occasional sparse cobbles and boulders are observed throughout the area. An extensive field of sea pens including Pennatula sp. and Kophobelemnon sp. occur, and the bamboo coral Acanella (both fir tree and bush-like forms) are recorded amongst the sea pens. Some fishing gear as well as plastic rubbish is observed on this dive. Dolphins (possibly common dolphins) were observed on the surface as the ROV was being deployed.

START VIDEO [00:00:00]/03:01. Muddy slope with scattered carbonate boulders/bedrock. Sea pen fields on muddy upslope towards the end of the dive. [1] The dive starts on muddy slope with scarce epifauna. ROV stops for pushcore sampling. [00:10:00] [2] Mixed sediment of rock and mud with scattered epifauna, including Phelliactis sp. 1. [00:11:00] ROV stops to test the sediment for potential core sampling. [00:13:00] Mud veneered carbonate bedrock. [00:14:00] Fishing gear. [00:17:00] [3] now biotope is predominantly mud hosting holothurians and eels. [00:19:00] ROV stops to test the sediment for potential core sampling. [00:28:00] [4] Here boulders and muddy sediment host various epifauna of corals, mainly anemones. [00:28:00] Plastic sheet on seafloor with boulders and cobbles. [00:36:00] [5] Mud and carbonate substrata hosting mainly cerianthids. [00:39:00] Ophiuroid legs sticking out of burrows on muddy slope. [00:40:00] mud veneered bedrock/vertical wall with scarce epifauna. [00:45:00] [6] Here pebbles and soft sediment host scarce epifauna, including ophiuriods. [00:53:00] [7] Biotope is now predominantly mud and boulder. Psolus sp. and anemones inhabit boulders, and ophiuroid on mud. [01:14:00] [8] Boulder hosts colonies of Lophelia pertusa and a few orange anemones, and also, fishing gear and plastic. [01:19:00] [9] Here biotope is mud with sparse seapens, crinoids and starfish. ROV stops for imagery of Swiftia pallida (poss). [01:25:00] ROV stops for sampling two pushcores. END VIDEO [02:06:00]/05:03.
