SeaRover Dive Video

D532 Transect RB07 Deep sea sponge aggregations on hard substrata with patches of Solenosmilia. Priority. Features: Escarpment, Ridge, SAC. Water depth: -1450 m. TL: 3.1 km. SOL: 14° 14.944' W 56° 11.158' N

Highlights: Yellow & white sponges Antipatharian coral Shark Hexactinellid sponge - Pheronema

Xenophyophore fields on soft sediment with sponge aggregations (lamellate, encrusting and lobose) are common throughout. The sponge Pheronema carpenteri occurs occasionally (approximately 10 throughout the dive). Solenosmilia reef occurs on top of a small carbonate mound. Corals included Paramuricea sp. were observed, with several large Eknomisis sp. and Leiopathes sp. present towards the end of the dive on carbonate sediment with mud overlay.

START VIDEO [1] [00:00:00]/20:37 Transect starts on a moderate slope of muddy sediment with occasional cobbles and boulders and many juvenile Coryphaenoides rupestris and Synaphobranchus kaupii being encountered. Encrusted sponges with patches of dead Solenosmilia variabilis reefs predominantly cover boulders. [2] [00:19:00] The boulders become more abundant and prevail on muddy sediment. Porifera lamellate (hexactinosida) dominate the site. At [00:20:00] the ROV zooms on the muddy sediment, which reveals a small sea pen field (poss Distichoptilum gracile) (<5x5m). [3] [00:35:00] Porifera (poss Pheronema carpenteri) dominates the muddy and pebble substrate for a short distance [4] [00:41:00] Here colonies of Solenosmilia reefs. Muddy sediment with occasional boulders become more abundant again, where porifera lamellate (hexactinosida) dominates. [5] [00:49:00] The ROV reaches a carbonate summit wtih a small patch of Solenosmilia variabilis framework. [6] [00:52:00] The ROV descends the summit, travelling down on a moderate muddy slope with abundant boulders where, again, porifera lamellate (hexactinosida) dominates. [7] [00:56:00] The muddy sediment is substituted with pebbles, while boulders persist. Towards the end of the video, deep sea sponge aggregations –including encrusting- are widely spread on hard substrata. END VIDEO 22:13.
