D652 Transect 47 Biogenic reef intersparse with muddy upslope, hosting Acanella arbuscula, Aphrocallistes sp. and feather stars. P1. Water Depth: 1115 m. Feature: Unknown area
Highlights: Xenophyophores - Syringammina fragilis Lophelia & hexactinellid sponge - Aphrocallistes Dumbo octopus - Grimpoteuthis
Of note: Corals Desmophyllum pertussum and Madrepora oculata
The seafloor is mainly soft sediment with some boulders. An area of coral reef is present with intermittent coral rubble followed by more soft sediment. The main faunal components are anemones and foraminifera. Sea pens, eels and fish are observed on the soft sediment. Glass sponges, the corals Desmophyllum pertussum and Madrepora occulata and crinoids are observed on boulders. An unknown anthozoan was collected. On the biogenic reef some gorgonian corals are observed which could not be identified.
START VIDEO A [00:00:00]/15:38. Biogenic reef interspersed with muddy upslope, hosting Acanella arbuscula, Aphrocallistes sp. and feather stars. [1] The dive starts on muddy slope with dominant Syringammina fragilissima. ROV stops for core sampling. [00:14:00] [2] Sediment is still the same as the first biotope, however epifauna now comprises also Pentametrocrinus atlanticus and Acanella arbuscula. [00:30:00] The dive continues on a gentle/moderate upslope hosting foraminifera fields and P. atlanticus aggregations. [00:33:00] [3] Geogenic reef with Lophelia and Acanthogorgia armata on large cobbles. Fishing net observed nearby a boulder. [00:36:00] [4] Biotope changes into soft sediment with frequent Foraminifera. [01:09:00] [5] Here Lophelia colonies (25-50% living) on moderate upslope, hosting many epifauna species including Aphrocallistes sp. and Pliobothrus sp. . [01:12:00] ROV stops for imagery of Aphrocallistes sp. . [01:23:00] [6] Now rippled sand/mud on moderate/steep slope with frequent foraminifera, sea pens and A. arbuscula. [01:28:00] [7] Lophelia reef on coarse sediment. Reef is spread out and 25-50% living. [00:01:40] ROV stops for imagery of poss Swiftia. Then stops for sampling it. [02:07:00] [8] Muddy slope with scattered epifauna. [02:09:00] Here Lophelia reef hosting Aphrocallistes sp. and crinoids. [02:10:00] [9] Again muddy/rippled sand slope with sparse epifauna including Lophelia colonies, foraminifera and feather stars. [02:12:00] Glass bottle on seafloor. END VIDEO A 17:53. VIDEO B [02:17:00]/18:01 [10] Muddy steep slope with scattered scarce epifauna. [02:33:10] ROV stops for imagery of cephalopod Opisthoteuthis extensa. [02:38:00] Still muddy upslope with scarce epifauna, especially starfish and sea urchins. END VIDEO B [02:43:18]/18:23.
