D475 Transect 46 Mud with patchy xenophyophores, some Acanella/ cerianthids/ Hyalonema. Features: predicted sponge field Water Depth: 1894-1190 m
Highlights: Ray Fish Sea urchin
The substrate here is that of carbonate sediment and is colonised by numerous bamboo and black coral species. Very large specimens Drifa sp. are present and the echinoids, including Cidaris cidaris, are ubiquitous. Small clumps of stony coral, predominantly Madrepora oculata, are also present throughout.
This additional site was identified as one with a high probability of containing a Phenomena carpenteri sponge field. The sea floor here is that of soft sediment and there is evidence of bioturbation. Holothurians are common; also present are sea pens, echinoids, the bamboo coral Acanella sp. and galatheid burrows. Small chimerids (possibly juveniles) were observed as was a single white ray. No sponges were recorded here.
START VIDEO [00:00:00]/16:29 [1] The entire transect is spent over muddy substrate with patchy xenophyophore aggregations (Syringammina fragilissima). Acanella arbuscula and burrowing anemones (Ceriantharia) are also frequently encountered. [00:06:00] moving right. [00:07:45]-[00:09:00] stopped for imagery of Leucoraja sp. [00:10:52]-[00:12:00] tracking and imaging Hydrolagus miriabilis juvenile then stopped [00:19:00]-[00:21:00] untwisting tether then re-orienting. [00:42:00]-[00:43:00] ROV backing up then moving right. [01:02:00]- [01:03:00] stopped. [01:06:30]-[01:18:00] stopped for 2 pushcores (1st attempt fails). [01:19:00] end of OFOP tracking and off bottom before END VIDEO [01:25:00]/17:49.
